Project Overview:

Provided labor, equipment, supervision and incidentals to build an MSE wall to support a ramp and shoulder to a new Railroad Bridge. The project included an MSE wall with leveling pad, Precast Coping, and Cast-in-place Coping.

Purpose/Challenges:

Due to severe deterioration of a railway bridge, VDOT was required to replace the structure. VDOT’s challenge was to find a cost effective and high quality system that would achieve a short construction schedule. Construction would include replacement of the structure, ramps, and embankments. An MSE wall design was selected as the appropriate application.

Solutions:

To minimize time and costs, and increase speed of construction, an MSE wall system was designated as the system to install when compared to cast-in-place, modular block, and segmental block alternatives. Orders Construction, the General Contractor for the project, needed an experienced and qualified wall installer to complete the retaining wall application for the project. Orders Construction selected Terra Constructs (Terra) to install the MSE wall.

Outcome:

Terra installed the MSE wall and coping on time and within budget, which allowed Orders Construction to complete the new bridge and improvements on schedule.
