Project Overview:

The National Park Service selected Terra Constructs to perform structural stabilization improvements for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, located in historic Georgetown, Washington D.C.

The Southside Prism adjacent to Wisconsin Avenue, which supports many historic buildings, had the potential for a structural failure. Terra was responsible for DOEE permitting, traffic control, E&S, excavation, structural concrete foundations, anchors and rock bolts, structural steel, timber lagging, structural fill, and site restoration.

Purpose:

Construction of a permanent shoring system which will maintain the historic fabric of the canal while also ensuring the structural integrity of the adjacent buildings.

Challenges:

  • Logistical constraints and environmental compliance
  • Stringent minimum vibration and noise level criteria
  • Material transport via a crane over historic buildings
  • COVID, Presidential Inauguration, Civil Unrest
  • Fixed completion date

Solutions:

  • Implementation of a Project plan with solution driven approach
  • Installation of remote vibration and noise monitors with alarm notifications
  • Development and implementation of material delivery innovations
  • Worked off-hours, weekends, and through inclement weather conditions
  • Team focus on achieving substantial completion to meet NPS constraints

Outcome:

Terra completed the project within the awarded performance period, while also overcoming significant challenges related to the pandemic, weather and physical constraints of the site.

The project success resulted from the collaborative and partnering culture fostered by the National Park Service, Engineer of Record, Trade Partners, and Terra.
